The J-1 classification visa is for those who intend on participating in an approved exchange program. Here are our 10 fast facts:


1. The J-1 Visa is a non-immigrant visa for a defined period of time. Although not impossible, it is very difficult to change this visa into something permanent.


2. Examples of exchange visitors include (but are not limited to): Professors or scholars, Research Assistants, Students, Trainees, Teachers, Specialists, Au Pairs, and Camp Counselors.


3. The Exchange Visitor Program is composed of both public and private entities to act as exchange sponsors.


4. Employment is only authorized under the terms of the sponsorship program.


5. Intent: To promote the exchange of skills, ideas, knowledge, and persons in the areas of art, science, and education.
